Oases, as ilots human within a hostile environment, played through the history, the roles of stopover, exchange, refuge and production, organized around the rarest resource: the water. The museum of Ghadames tells the story of one of these oases, through his inhabitants, their manners, customs and know-how. Place of expression and cultural promotion, it will participate to rewrite the future of Ghadames, by bringing it new visitors, by protecting its craft heritage and by creating new jobs. The garden completes the internal collections by telling the agricultural story of the palm grove, the symbol still living on a long tradition of optimization of the resource in water, by means of traditional systems of management and storage.
Contemporary evocation of a vernacular agricultural mode, the garden gets organized vertically, in a series of strata raised, palm tree-date palms, then fruits, creating the shade necessary for crops. These are contained on the ground by the horizontal weft of irrigation channels and elevations. Their irrigation is made by dumping. The primary agricultural functions, to feed, look after itself, to dress, organize the rectangles of cultures in a visible geometrical drawing since the path leading to the museum as well as since the outside passageway. Teaching aid, the garden is read by a specific signaling system but also lives by means of workshops.
